km. away from Ranikhet, Doonagiri is a pilgrim spot
noted for its ancient Durga Temple. This temple attracts
great number of pilgrims, during the fair days at
Navratri.

Mela
It
is celebrated on the Vishuwat Sankranti day and
commemorates and ancient victory. On this day, the
Bagwal is held at Syalde Pokhar in the old town of
Dwarahat. People also celebrate the occasion with music,
songs and dancing. One day before this a similar fair is
held at Vibhandeshwar in which Lord Shiva is worshiped.
The Syalde Bikhauti fair has been successful in
retaining its old colour and gaiety to a large
extent..
Gananath

The
Gananath Mandir which is famous for its cave and Shiva
temple is 47 kms. from Almora and near the Satrali
village (Takula) at an altitude of 2,116 mts. A fair is
held here at every Kartik Purnima and the whole place
resounds with the echoes of folk songs, which are
invariably accompanied by enchanting folk dances.
The
picturesque old part of the town is the venue for a fair
held twice a year during the summer and winter months.
Swami Vivekananda came to Almora and gained
enlightenment in a small cave at Kasar Devi.
Jageshwar
Mela
Jageshwar,
a cluster of large and small temples and of the Swayambhu
(Jyotir Linga) Lingas to be found in India, is at a
distance of 34kms. along the Almora - Pithoragarh road.
Leaving the main road behind, one moves into the
beautiful valley of Jataganga at Aartola and passes by
the Daneshwar temple along the way, Innumerable Deodar
trees tower above the grand temple complex. Two large
fairs are held at Jageshwar, one at the occasion of
Shivratri and the other in the month of Shravan
(July-Aug).
During the fair people take holy dips
in the Brahma Kund (pool) and worship Lord Shiva. On
this day, fairs are also held in many other
places.
Somnath
Fair
This
fair, also on Vishuwat Sankranti day is held in the
Shiva temple at Masi. It is a famous fair of Pali
Pachhaum. Animals, specially bullocks and calves, are
sold at this fair. On the same day a fair is held at
Thal. In the summer the people in the valley of Ramganga
W., especially in Masi and Bhikiasen, celebrate the
unique machhli utsav (the fish festival). The villagers
bearing tumra come with Jaal, fatyav and hathiya to the
river to catch fish. The fish festival is locally known
as Dahau.
